Datong Ancient City is a square city, 1.8 kilometers long from east to west, 1.82 kilometers long from north to south, and covers an area of 3.28 square kilometers. In 1982, the Chinese central government included Datong in the first list of "National Historical and Cultural Cities". Since 1990s, under the impact of urban development, part of Datong Historical district was demolished and turned into ruins. In 2008, Datong began rebuilding historical buildings in an effort to shift the local economy to tourism, it resulted in more than a third of the historical district completely disappeared. This destructive reconstruction leads to severely damage of historical and cultural relics. In 2019, the central government issued a statement to protect the historical district for Datong government.
